At Hakumi, everything revolves around Kumiko, an ancient Japanese woodworking technique in which small wooden elements are precisely fitted together to create refined geometric patterns.
Our specialty is designing and crafting Kumiko lighting. In our webshop, you'll find a selection of standard designs that are ready to order. But a standard design doesn't always fit every interior, space or idea perfectly.
That's why Hakumi also offers bespoke designs and custom-made pieces.
Made to fit your vision
Perhaps you love one of our lamps, but would prefer it to be larger, smaller or in a different proportion. No problem.
You can, for example:
- Have an existing Hakumi design made in a different size
- Choose a different type of wood
- Combine different types of wood
- Have an existing design adapted to your wishes
- Request a completely custom lamp
- Have another piece of furniture designed with Kumiko as its central element
Choose your wood
The type of wood has a major influence on the character and appearance of a piece.
That's why you are not limited to the wood used in our standard designs. Our wood supplier offers an extensive selection of premium-quality wood species, allowing us to find a material that suits both your interior and your design.
For our Kumiko designs, we use basswood as our standard material, a choice we've perfected for its light tone, fine grain, and compatibility with traditional lattice work. This cannot be customized.
When selecting wood for other elements of your piece, such as frames or supporting structures, it's important to ensure harmony with the basswood. Below you'll find our wood comparator, a visual guide showing how different wood species complement and contrast with basswood, helping you create a cohesive design.
